Where the Heart Is?

Part 2

Remember where we left off? Asking God to show us where our minds perhaps “take over” the heart? I think that “going there” is the most challenging and often most avoided aspect of our walk with our Shepherd. For if the heart is all those things that our look into the meaning of that word is…well it can be over-whelming to say the least! In fact – I was a bug-eyed doe with my jaw on the floor when He told me what He wanted me to write about next! “Really Lord?? How can I even begin to write about the heart? No one knows it but You!” His answer??

“Well then Child, perhaps you’ll have to just write down what I say?” (Sensing His smile…)

Oh yeah, it’s not about me!!

At the beginning of Part 1 – we focused a bit on the physical heart. Remember the most important component? Blood. In Hebrew the word blood is – dam – and is first used in Genesis 9:4 – blood is synonymous with life. In Greek its – haima – and is the same as the Hebrew word dam. The heart can not function without blood, and just any ole blood won’t do. We all know that we all have a specific type of blood. Type O is the only blood type that can be donated to any blood type. Why would this be important in looking at the heart mentioned almost 900 times in the Bible? Well, lets see…

Leviticus 17:11

For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for yourselves; for it is the blood that makes atonement because of the life.

**A note about atonement: The word – cover – in Hebrew is  – kaphar – means “to cover over” but is often translated as atonement. The word atonement is an abstract word and in order to understand the true Hebrew meaning (which is the language Jesus, Yeshua, used) we must look to the concrete meaning. If an offense has been made, the one that has been offended can act as though the offense is covered over and unseen. We express this idea through the word of forgiveness. Atonement is an outward action that covers over the error. (Ancient Hebrew Dictionary by Jeff A. Benner)

Exodus 12:13 – God speaking – emphasis mine

“The blood will serve you as a sign marking the houses where you are, when I see the blood, I will pass-over you – when I strike the land of Egypt. The death blow will not strike you.”

John 6:53-57 – Jesus speaking – emphasis mine

Then Yeshua (Jesus) said to them, “Yes, indeed! I tell you that unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life in yourselves. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life – that is, I will raise him up on the Last Day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me, and I live in him. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live through the Father, so also whoever eats me will live through me.”

Notice verse 60

On hearing it, many of his talmidim (disciples) said, “This is a hard word – who can bear to listen to it?”

Ephesians 1:7

In union with him, through the shedding of his blood, we are set free – our sins are forgiven; this accords with the wealth of the grace he has lavished on us.

Hebrews 9:12, 22

…he entered the Holiest Place once and for all. And he entered not by means of the blood of goats and calves, but by means of his own blood, thus setting people free forever.

In fact, according to the Torah (Law), almost everything is purified with blood; indeed, without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.

So now we see – that the heart mentioned in the Bible – our center – our home of trust – is as dependant upon blood as our tickers. 🙂 No blood, no beat, no breath, no life. The blood of the Lamb now covers us and death will pass-over where we are! In our hearts is where we are to live (see John 6:53-57 reference). I believe the blood that pumps through our hearts is the Word both in our Bibles and spoken by our very much alive, very much active Voice of our Shepherd whose blood it is that was shed for us all. The drinking of that blood – is the allowing Him to change our hearts with it, the transfusion – donation of His blood for our own. The Ultimate type O of the soul!

I said earlier that centering on our hearts is the most challenging and often avoided thing we do. Remember verse 60 of John 6? They felt this way too! Thinking of a physical eating and drinking of Yeshua’s flesh (the Word) and Blood (Living water) was mind boggling! Read this chapter in its entirety – the gift we are given to translate the physical into the spiritual is spoken of. The gift was given for our HEARTS alone!

God speaks in the language of the heart. If we are to hear Him – we must learn this language…Amen?

Where the Heart Is? Part 3 coming soon! 🙂
