Parental Perplexities

Simple struggles can often be the most un-obviously deep.

I often find in quiet time reading…people referring to how a parent responds to their child in such a way as I have never experienced. Indeed, I could say the majority of those I’ve known would agree. There are some exceptions, but I speak of a personally experienced over-all.

First, my own experience as a child with my own parents. Second, my own experience as a parent to a child. Thirdly my realm of others both friends and family that have shared their struggles in both ways with me.

Let me clarify here my “mission” is not to find blame for which all parental frailties and faults lay. Nor to even put a spot light on that perspective in any way. Yet, as I have observed to date; I believe a persons greatest struggle with God and how to relate to Him lay upon the horizon of how we grasp a father, mother…ie: parent. If this area be ascewed in any way we stand the risk of misunderstanding our primary reason for drawing breath everyday.

The illustrations in the Bible of God being 1st our Father, then referred to as like a mother, with illustrations of each, they abound, and are abundant.

Matthew 23:37 – Yeshua (Jesus) speaking.
“Jerusalem! Jerusalem! You kill the prophets! You stone those who are sent to you! How often I wanted to gather your children, just as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, but you refused!”

Psalm 27:10
Even though my father and mother have left me, Adonai (the Lord) will care for me.

Jeremiah 31:9
…For I am a Father to Israel, and Efrayim (Ephraim) is My firstborn son.

Isaiah 49:15
Can a woman forget her child at the breast, not show pity on the child from her womb? Even if these were to forget, I would not forget you.

And the infamous parable in Luke 15:11-32 of the Prodigal son. To name a few.

Then there’s John, his book is overflowing with references that are clear. The Father (God) and the Son (God) are irrefutably inseparable! And plainly Yeshua (Jesus) states that our main objective IS to know our Father, as He knows the Father.

John 5:23 – Jesus speaking
so that all may honor the Son as they honor the Father. Whoever fails to honor the Son is not honoring the Father who sent Him.

6:43-45
Yeshua answered them, “Stop grumbling to each other! No one can come to me unless the Father- the One who sent Me – draws him. And I will raise him up on the Last Day. It is written in the Prophets, They will be taught by Adonai (the Lord), Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from Him comes to Me.

10:30
I and the Father are one.

15:1
I am the real vine, and My Father is the Gardner.

15:23
Whoever hates Me hates My Father also.

Just to name a few. I encourage a thorough reading of the whole gospel to grasp the full impact of this theme.

So my own personal perspective of father and mother is a frame of reference for which I relate to God. As is yours. And that in mind I come back to the beginning of my post. This strange link between parent and child and how often I don’t relate to much of an authors references to them which beautifully ( at least that’s the intention) tie a hopeful and encouraging purpose between us and God. I am learning…and do find a clearer mind in understanding this. Growth in our walk is given to re-learning and much un-learning what we have known, if you will. So this is part 1 of a series where I will share much of my un and re-learning with you. I pray that you will ask the Spirit, our Counselor to begin to open your mind, eyes, ears, and heart to His specific “highlights” as you go through your days this week in preparation and healing as we journey our walk together in this series. Please pray for me, as I study and write these, that the Truth be fully honored, the Shepherd be the direction pointed to, and the Father made known and glorified.

Jesus was asked how to pray. His first suggested words were: “Our Father, who is in Heaven.” There are so many who fail to grasp the significance of those first words, what it means to call God our Father, it breaks His heart. Let us therefore, seek to KNOW exactly how HE would have our hearts from within fully respond to such an opening of our prayers. To fully KNOW Him as a Father, the Father HE IS, not the kind we’ve known, or WE could image He would like us to think He is. But as He truly is, and can teach us at His feet.

Grace and peace in Yeshua the Messiah 🙂
