The Helmet of Salvation

2 Corinthians 10:3-5
For although we do live in the world, we do not wage war in a worldly way; because the weapons we use to wage war are not worldly. On the contrary, they have God’s power for demolishing strongholds. We demolish arguments and every arrogance that raises itself up against the knowledge of God; we take every thought captive and make it obey the Messiah.

This passage of scripture has been used and applied in such different and varied applications; I forgot that they were grouped together! The “we live in the world, but not of it” movement if you will, though not without its value of application, takes this scripture out of its context and applies it in a singular way. (I see that it gives emphasis to “one-upmanship or us verses them’ism) Its true context is to emphasize an internal and unseen world, called most commonly the spiritual world. Its a counter part to Ephesians 6:10-18. Which reminds us, and encourages us that 1st we are at war, and 2nd to “suit up”, put on our battle gear, and fight! To extract the one verse and infer only that we are in the world but not of it, well it is akin to giving an answer to a question without having asked it.

I think many translations actually take out the wage war part entirely. The emphasis in verses 3&4 is to put before us that yet again our walk is internal first not external. An example:
We are in an argument with another. What appears on the outside to be important, for the child of God, shifts our attention to our internal inclinations and thoughts. When one is being yelled at, insulted, hurt, accused, or challenged (which covers most reasons for fights/arguments), we often feel like yelling back, accusing, hurting, insulting right back at the offender. What Paul is saying with all these scriptures together is…Don’t use those weapons, remember the weapons we have newly acquired, train with them, remember to start inside, take that thought to Yeshua (Jesus), now lay your defense at His hand, is the insult set up against the knowledge of God? Likely not, it likely is rooted in human knowledge about humans. Lay down the worldly way, worldly weapons and fight the real battle here. Send love in response to hurtful ways. Speak with respect especially when being yelled at. Take up your humility in response to your internal need to be right, defend, punch back. Listen to your Commander and Chief, He has fought and won the battles, He is training you. The world uses biting words, sarcasism, judgement and accusation, don’t live there inside! If we pay attention to how and where we live inside, the outside takes care of itself.

The other verse that so often gets pulled out of the group here…take every thought captive. Again while applying this to struggles of ANY kind works and has its value. It loses it “cut” without the context the Spirit of God led Paul to put it in. The reason is clearly seen when taken altogether. That we can take every thought captive at all times is no less true, but the obedience and discipline becomes a weapon not another method. God is in the business of war, fighting for His children. This statement can not be over emphasized! Don’t we know that hurt feelings is the enemies weapon? Wounded pride, misunderstanding, false accusation, condemnation, judgement, insults, anger, malice, sarcasm, all are worldly weapons of warfare…all are meant to bring not only YOU, but the other down! All are sent out with the intent of the WORLD forgetting its Saviour! This is always to be a foundation to our vision, perspective, and view. “What is really going on here, Jesus?” – when can’t we ask this question? It would indeed be unwise and worldly to forget or neglect to place this question as the face-shield to our helmet, which is part of our armor, given by Christ the day we enlisted to be His child. The day we were adopted. The day we most assuredly became in and not of this world. Praise Jesus for our helmet!

Grace and peace in Yeshua the Messiah 🙂
