Rapid Reversals that Find their Freedom in Truth

Genesis 1:3-4
Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and God divided the light from the darkness.

The way I have always, until recently, understood the word good has been – something that delights someone, causing feelings of a positive nature.
While it has not been completely wrong to think in that way; it wasn’t completely right either. It was off by degrees and in some ways by light years.
Good – as God is, and only He is – is as follows.
Good – is functional, something that works or operates just exactly as designed/planned/created.

Bad then would be its opposite, if you will. Something that does not operate exactly as designed/planned/created. Usually a feeling of “not goodness” comes with bad but, the feelings are not the indicators of either good or bad.
Bad then is defined as dysfunctional. A word that gets used alot in “recovery” language. Examples:
We come from dysfunctional families.
When something breaks it becomes dysfunctional, ceases to work as it was designed.

We don’t say: we come from bad families (at least in the socially acceptable arenas).
And just because my clock, stereo, TV, car, heart (emotionally) or body (physically) may be broken, ceasing to function as they should; this does not make them bad.

We tend to place alot of emotionally descriptive words to what we define as good or bad.

If I lie, and feel no remorse over it that wouldn’t mean its good. Something in my design and creation does cease to function properly, but my lack of feeling bad would not then redefine the lying as good would it?

Likewise, if I tell the truth and then feel bad; either because it was not well received or denied, that wouldn’t make telling the truth bad either, right?

See feelings tend to weave their way in as “guides” for how we define things. Which is not good. Good as in the true definition. Take love for example (which God, Himself is also the very definition); true love does not depend on feelings. God IS, whether one feels He is or not. He is love. He is good.

Mark 10:17-18
As He (Yeshua/Jesus) was starting on His way, a man ran up, kneeled down in front of Him and asked, “Good Rabbi, (teacher) what should I do to obtain eternal life?”
Yeshua said to him, “Why are you calling Me good? No one is good except God!”

There’s a whole other blog post worth of stuff here, such as why did Yeshua ask why he called Him good? Does this somehow indicate He isn’t/wasn’t God? I, must for the sake of “sticking to the point” not go there right here and now. The quick answer is simply that Yeshua asked that question for the clarity needed on behalf of all who were listening and the young man. A reverse psychology if you will. My emphasis is simply to have the “horses mouth” “back me up” here. Yeshua, Himself, said “Only God is good!” Keeping in mind, He is the gate by which we enter truth.
By definition, only God is completely functional or good. He was not designed/planned/created. He just IS. And He is the Designer, Planner, Creator.

So if God’s very definition is good; the only functional One, then there is no bad or dysfunction in Him. So anything that exist that is good, proves He both is and is present. By this way of viewing good/bad. Lets look at more scripture, and see how much more abundant it is after understanding the true meaning of those words. This time keeping good in this perspective and its opposite which is truly called evil but often called bad today.

Psalms 31:19
But oh, how great is Your goodness, which You have stored up for those who fear You, which You do for those who take refuge in You, before people’s very eyes!

Lamentations 3:25-26
Adonai is good to those waiting for Him, to those who are seeking Him out.
It is good to wait patiently for the saving help of Adonai.

Matthew 7:17-20
Likewise, every healthy tree produces good fruit, but a poor tree produces bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, or a poor tree good fruit. Any tree that does not produce good fruit is cut down and thrown in the fire. So you will recognize them by their fruit.

Matthew 12:34-35
You snakes! How can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what overflows from the heart. The good person brings forth good from his store of good, and the evil person brings forth evil things from his store of evil.

John 10:11
I am the good Shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

Romans 2:4
Or perhaps you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and patience; because you don’t realize that God’s goodness is intended to lead you to turn from your sins.

1 Timothy 6:12
Fight the good fight of the faith, take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you testified so well to your faith before many witnesses.

Keeping in mind that wherever we see God or any reference to Him via He, Him, His, you can put in “the One of perfect function”. Or where the word good is can be read as “functional according to design” where it refers to anything or anyone He has designed/created. Or where bad/evil is mentioned, read as “dysfunctional, not as God designed/created”.

It has not changed the basics of how I grasped scripture with those words before. Yet, somehow it means more than it did before. It is even clearer. It causes me to praise and worship God, Yeshua, the Spirit more deeply.
I pray it does you too. That where we go to seek Him in all His goodness we find more freedom, clarity, and purpose!

Grace and peace in Yeshua the Messiah ❤
