The Gentle Call

Acts 3:19-20
“Therefore, repent and turn to God, so that your sins may be erased; so that times of refreshing may come from the Lord’s presence; and He may send the Messiah appointed in advanced for you, that is, Yeshua (Jesus).

Matthew 4:17
From that time on, Yeshua (Jesus) began proclaiming, “Turn from your sins to God, for the Kingdom of God is near!”

The strength of the proclamation, “Turn, repent, go now to Yeshua (Jesus) and live!” has lost something. Is it in translation? Is it the sound of “fire and brimstone” religion? Why doesn’t the miracle of those words produce the awe and eager turning that it invites?

For myself, I know that much was “lost in translation”. There is a very big difference between “I am sorry” and “I repent“. Repentance is a turning, and action in the reverse of the present course. Sorry, is a feeling, a sadness of a recognized wrong or hurt done.
Let me try to illustrate.

A person lies to someone. Lets say they lie to people alot. Examples range from where they were “to spare someone’s feelings”. To what they want verses what they say they want, in order to manipulate things and people to their own advantage. They lie, first to themselves. Then the action comes from the first lie within to the outward lie to others. These kinds of “little white lies” (I have no idea why that saying ever came to be, as there is NO such thing as a little lie, white, black, red, purple…who classifies lies by color??) are the deadliest of all. They start inside where no one but God and the person themselves can see or know. The person who deceives themselves is not capable of truth to anyone else.

So in the illustration above what does sorry “look like”. Well if not caught in the lie, sorry may simply be a mild irritation that now one must remember their lie. A feeling of “inconvenience”. If caught, one may say sorry and have feelings of sadness that they have lost trust or respect. A sense of disappointment in oneself for lying may rise to the surface. Even a determined thought not to do it again. But, the next day having only turned momentarily from lying they are “set up” to do so again. Why? Because repentance is the cure for sin, not just acknowledgement that it is. Sorry is self-absorbed.

Repentance is a turning to God. He is our 24 hours a day, always on-hand counselor, adviser, teacher and “order-giver” if you will. He teaches and instructs us to our motive for lying, in His presence while doing so we understand and develop a strong aversion and distaste for the sin being scrutinized. He then sends us forth in the opposing direction to train-in the correct living. If we lie, He tells us to do the other/opposite thing, tell the truth. This starts within where we “talk” to ourselves. If we steal, He sends us down the road of giving. If we gossip, He sends us towards speaking only that which uplifts and invites love of others. We choose to turn to Him and take action on His advise. Repentance.
We can NOT repent without God. It is as impossible to repent without God, as it is to breathe without lungs.

Repentance and turning are invitations to really living! The best kind of living a human being can ever achieve!! It comes straight out of Gods heart of love, grace and mercy as a gift! Then when we “blow it” again, we have the greatest gift, Yeshua’s own righteousness that gets applied to our wound! So continued relationship with God can continue without delay due to our sin. What an amazing and powerful gift! To be able to walk and talk and be lead by the One who created all things!

The Book of Proverbs is an amazing book of just such gifts of leading, guiding and instruction sent straight from the very heart of God with love and wisdom! It refers to two “she’s, her’s, and women”. One is Wisdom, the one who turns to God. The other is Wicked, the one who turns away from God. Wicked is referred to as a harlot. Wisdom is the beautiful beloved bride of God. One points to the Way that leads to Him. The other points to the way one can go that will lead to having to turn around in order to get going back toward Who you were made for. You can almost always put Yeshua’s (Jesus’) name in place of any of the “good” words; wisdom knowledge, counsel, reproof, direction, correction, commands, my words, understanding, insight, discernment, common sense, justice, fairness, good path. He is the gate by which we enter into a Kingdom He ushered in the day He died. When He said, “It is finished!” I think of this as the little instruction book of the detailed “Learning of turning”.

I will list some Proverbs below, boldening the words that connect all from above.

Proverbs 2:10-15
For wisdom will enter your heart, knowledge will be enjoyable to you, discretion will watch over you, and discernment will guard you. They will save you from the way of evil and from those who speak deceitfully, who leave the paths of honesty to walk the ways of darkness, who delight in doing evil and take joy in being stubbornly deceitful, from those whose tracks are twisted and paths are perverse.

Proverbs 3:32
but the perverse is an abomination to Adonai (the Lord), but He shares His secret counsel with the upright.

Proverbs 4:4-6
He too taught me; He said to me, “Let your heart treasure My Words; keep My commands, and live; gain wisdom, gain insight; don’t forget or turn from the words I am saying. Don’t abandon (wisdom); then She will preserve you; love Her, and She will protect you.

Proverbs 10:32
The lips of the righteous know what is wanted, but the mouth of the wicked knows deceit.

Proverbs 12:22
Lying lips are an abomination to Adonai, but those who deal faithfully are His delight.

Proverbs 16:23
The wise man’s heart teaches his mouth, and to his lips adds learning.

Proverbs 19:2
To act without knowing how you function is not good; and if you rush ahead, you will miss your goal.

Proverbs 20:27
The human spirit is a lamp of Adonai; it searches one’s inmost being.

Proverbs 20:11
The character of even a child is known by how he acts, by whether his deed are pure and right.

Proverbs 16:1
A person is responsible to prepare his heart, but how a tongue speaks is from Adonai.

The idea of turning and repentance was meant to be as a drink of Living Water to a soul. Yet I will admit, most don’t teach it with the emphasis on the benefits born out of the heart of God’s compassion anymore. It lacks the patience and kind instruction that Yeshua displayed. It lacks invitation when spoken or written laced with condemnation. The Counselor I meet with every hour of every day, teaches me. He doesn’t harass me. He woo’s, and gently guides. He LOVES me. He starts from the inside and what comes out, is truly an amazing gift! Repentance in turning to Him and away from my own thinking (which makes sense to me at the time) is a miracle! My hope, my prayer is that in the character and name of Yeshua (Jesus); that this message becomes the gentle call to all whom He loves.

Grace and peace in Yeshua the Messiah ❤
