From that time on, Yeshua (Jesus) began proclaiming, “Turn from your sins to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near!”
As Yeshua walked by Lake Kinneret (Sea of Galilee), He saw two brothers who were fisherman – Shim’on (Simon), known as Kefa (Peter), and his brother Andrew – throwing their net into the lake. Yeshua said to them, “Come after Me, and I will make you fishers for men!” At once they left their nets and went with Him.
Going on from there, He saw two other brothers – Ya’akov Ben-Zavdai (James son of Zebedee) and Yochanan (John) his brother – in the boat with their father Zavdai (Zebedee), repairing their nets; and He called to them. At once, they left their boat and their father and went with Yeshua.
Matthew 8:22 (see also Luke 9:57-62)
But Yeshua replied, “Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”
Matthew 9:9 (see also Luke:22)
As Yeshua passed on from there He spotted a tax-collector named Mattityahu (Matthew/Levi) sitting in his collection booth. He said to him, “Follow Me!” and he got up and followed him.
Matthew 10:38 ~ Yeshua speaking…
And anyone who does not take up his execution-stake and follow Me is not worthy of Me.
Matthew 16:24 ~ Yeshua speaking
Then Yeshua told His talmidim (followers/disciples), “If anyone wants to come after Me, let him say ‘No’ to himself, take up his execution-stake, and keep following Me.
Matthew 19:21 (see also Mark 10:21)
Yeshua said to him, “If you are serious about reaching the goal, go and sell your possessions, give to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven. Then come, follow Me!
The next day, having decided to leave for Galil, Yeshua found Philip and said, “Follow Me!”
Yeshua spoke to them again: “I am the Light of the world; whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness but will have the light which gives life.”
John 10:27 ~ Yeshua speaking…
My sheep listen to My Voice, I recognize them, they follow Me,
John 12:26 ~ Yeshua speaking…
If someone is serving Me, let him follow Me; wherever I am, My servant will be there too. My Father will honor anyone who serves Me.
John 21:19; 22
He said this to indicate the kind of death by which Kefa (Peter) would bring glory to God. Then Yeshua said to him, “Follow Me!”
Yeshua said to him, “If I want him to stay on until I come, what is that to you? You, you follow Me!”
In Hebrew the word ‘follow’ does not exist. The words that are connected to its meaning are; adhere, work, yoke and brand.
To adhere is to join or stick to someone or something.
To work means a message through action.
To yoke – one who yokes – teams up with – the strength of one who rules or teaches
To be branded is to carry the ‘mark’ of one who has purchased the ‘rights’ to all ones actions.
These four Hebrew words are the message being spoken by Yeshua when we read the word ‘follow’.
It goes without saying that the One Yeshua followed was His Father.
Its interesting that nowhere in the Testimonies of Yeshua’s walk and work here does anyone speak of Yeshua telling them in advanced where He was headed every day or how many they would heal, feed, encounter. It would have read something like…
Upon rising the next day Yeshua gathered us and told us, “Today we will head to Samaria, on the way we will heal people and pray for them, then I will speak to a woman there at the well, then we will camp for the night.”
In fact the only context where Yeshua spoke in advanced or future terms were prophetic or instructive. Instructive was still given only for the moment He was sending them into.
As He approached Beit-Pagei (Bethphage) and Beit-Anyah (Bethany), by the Mount of Olives He sent two talmidim (followers/disciples) instructing them, “Go into the village ahead; on entering it, you will find a colt tied up that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks ‘why are you untying it’, tell him ‘The Lord needs it.’ Those who were sent went off and found it just as He had told them.
This is an example of instructive/prophetic in the very short term…yet ahead of the actual moment they were in. He did this when sending the disciples off to preach, heal and proclaim the Kingdom of Heaven as well. Giving instructions for as they went ahead of ‘time’. (Matthew 10:7-20) Yet these are the few not majority. Have you ever asked ‘why’?
There are two ‘schools’ of thought here. The first, and most popular; that prior to ‘leaving heaven for His earthly mission’ Yeshua got His “marching orders” in detail and stuck to the plan.
The second and least popular;
That Yeshua knew the basic plan for man’s redemption, but Followed His Fathers voice of instruction with each human day He lived, doing everything as it was spoken to Him.
I submit, that the first puts a damper on the concept that Yeshua could understand the human experience as we do if His whole life was scripted before He was ‘born’. None has ever experience life this way. Seems like “cheating”; and indeed it is an argument to many who dispute Yeshua’s Godhead, ministry and claims. Honestly if one believes the first line of thinking I can understand why they doubt Him.
But!! But if the second line of thinking be the Truth, it puts Yeshua in human skin, with the whole human experience fully realized by Him. It also shows how all who came before Him as The Fathers messengers and likenesses of Yeshua Himself, how they were able to be called righteous. They heard God call, instruct, and obeyed (or disobeyed and their story reflects how they lived in disobedience). So this line of “thinking” holds up to both old and new Testament’s – the whole of God’s word. This line of thinking is well…scarey! Even the most beloved of Pastors and teachers warn against a person believing that God can “talk” to them. For instance telling the masses that “God does not just tell people to up and move somewhere” achem….hello what about Abraham??? We humans have a hard time with “God-possession” because of its counterpart in demon-possession! We like to be the ones who say what God will and won’t do…history is replete with evidence of this. God in the same history is consistent in showing His limitlessness.
So if Yeshua did follow the Voice of God as the second line of thinking ensues…is there evidence? Biblically speaking? Is there somewhere where Yeshua says there is something The Father knows that He does not??
Matthew 24:36 ~ Yeshua speaking…
But when that day and hour will come, no one knows – not the angels in heaven, not the Son, only the Father.
Acts 1:7 ~ Yeshua speaking…
He answered, “You don’t need to know the dates or the times; the Father has kept these under His own Authority.
We also see this “no need for advanced warning/worrying in Yeshua’s teaching where He speaks of not worrying about what we will wear, eat, sleep or what we will say in advanced. (Matthew 6:25-34; Matthew 10:19-20; Luke 12:11) Indeed there is much more to support this than the first school of thought. When Yeshua came, He was the physical manifestation of following God. We saw Him, heard Him like we hear each other…but then He said “Do as I do.” He then went on in great detail to explain…how He does it! Following Yeshua is a daily tuning into Him (who now lives inside you!) The Father, because they are One, and the Spirit, sent specifically to lead us into the Truth…the Truth is Yeshua! The awesome and incredible thing about Yeshua’s work was two part…one…forgiveness and total atonement for sin…two…the veil that ripped from between us and God the Father giving access to our direct communion with Him. Why the latter if God has no intention of speaking to His children? I submit, that the Holy Spirit is exactly what “gives us ears” to hear.
Next part we explore the evidence that supports this less popular line of thinking…making perfect love cast out fear!
Grace and peace in Yeshua the Messiah ❤
