Eternal Arms that Hold

January 30, 2015 at 4:28 am (Poems) (, , , , , , , , , , , , )

Oh you little critical voice
That creeps inside of me
That dives inside and tries to hide
The truth that you are free

That turns your thoughts
Towards other lots
And starts to grab the gavel
Accusing gibes with condemning tides
Where only Love should travel

Those twisted shouts
And selfish pouts
That rage against His Love
I see you now
And throw you off
The Hands of God now shove!

I cast you out
No more to heed
Your hellish sing and creed
There is a Judge
Upright and fair
The pith of every need!

His holiness and bent down hands
Will cover every ear
With precious Blood
That takes the blame
And covers every fear

With His love so rich
And gracious fare
That souls grow mercy wings
I harken now
The hallowed song
And join as Heaven sings

“Fear not, dear child
Call out for help
That rests inside My keeping
That voice of hurt
And graceless worth
My Life shall bring forth leaping!”

All at once
The critical voice
Vanishes like a mist
The rightful Judge
Now sounds His voice
And Love cannot resist

The rest and peace
Where grace now cries
Forgive! And be forgiven!
The heart begins to find its song
And sends it’s voice to the Living!

I thank Thee God
For Your great work
That tends to every sorrow
With faithful grace and mercy calls
That teaches us to Follow

Salvation’s path
The Healers creed
I run towards Your position
And leave behind
Thoughts unkind
With obedience and precision

Yielding up
Submitting to
The righteous Voice emitting
Chain breaking waves
That Freedoms work is bidding

No captives here
No slaves to find
Just precious lambs within Your fold
I harken now and leap into
Eternal arms that hold!

Adoption, Disciple, Enlistment – A Call to War

August 14, 2014 at 1:56 am (WSGD Newes) (, , , , , , , , )

Its a wonder to me that I have found such priceless treasures of literature that for all the world should be on the number one top sellers list for anyone who follows Yeshua (Jesus); but somehow they slip into a well dusted but dark corner of the published world. The Christian in Complete Armor by William Gurnall is just such a treasure. It’s rarely mentioned amongst the “devoutly religious” speakers and authors today. To be fair it was mentioned by Allister Begg. .. hence how I stumbled upon it myself. But listen to what some of these pillars of the faith have said of this book. They came along after William was gone from this earth, but the work God called him to do fed well beyond five thousand.

“If I might read only one book besides the Bible, I would choose The Christian in Complete Armor.” – John Newton (1726-1807)

“A beautiful feature in Gurnall’s book is its richness in pithy, pointed, and epigrammatical sayings. You will often find in a line and a half some great truth, put so concisely, and yet so fully, that you really marvel how so much thought could be got into so few words.
Solid scriptural theology, like that contained in these pages, should be valued and studied in the church. Books in which the Scripture is reverently regarded as the only rule of faith and practice – books in which Christ and the Holy Spirit have their rightful office – books in which justification, sanctification, regeneration, faith (trust), grace and holiness are clearly, distinctly, and accurately delineated and exhibited – these are the only books which do real good. Few things need reviving more than a taste for such books as these among readers.” – J.C. Ryle (1816-1900)

“Gurnall’s work is peerless and priceless; every line is full of wisdom; every sentence suggestive. This ‘Complete Armor’ is beyond all other a preacher’s book: I should think that more discourses have been suggested by it than any other inspired volume. I have often resorted to it when my own fire was burning low, and I have seldom failed to find a glowing coal upon Gurnall’s hearth.”  – Charles Hadden Spurgeon (1834-1892)

Given how many people quote Spurgeon alone. .. it would bare remarkable to suggest we find who in his library he came to know that influenced his walk with God so profoundly.  C.S. Lewis called George MacDonald his master! And McDonald’s countless books take second place on the dark but dustless shelf next to Gurnall. It is rather interesting to me how God often hides things in plain sight. ..emphasis on plain.

Given the fact that the ‘end-times’ began at the death and Resurrection of Yeshua the Messiah. .. one would think a book like this would be flying off the shelves and being quoted by every serious follower of the Messiah. Yet obscure though it may be. .. it shines so bright a light time cannot snuff it out. The book was first published in 1665 with two more publications in 1658 and 1662; then revised and reprinted again in 1864. Long did the dust collect from 1864 to 1986 when it again was revised and reprinted, the printing we now can purchase and enjoy. There is an edited addition (the one I will be copying from) which takes the old King James/English verbage and makes it easier to read. And for those who want to read it just as it was written an Unrevised edition.

There is a saying that suits Gurnall well, “Dust of heros, God will know you.” Often given to those fallen/deceased in the “line of duty” in service to their country in the armed forces. .. what a completely appropriate thing to say in Gurnall’s regard! This man was at the feet of the King of Angel Armies often and wrote down His strategies of war and the tactics of our enemy with complete dedication found like that of those who wrote the prophecies.

I will begin to post from beginning to end this book. There are such small sections at a time from beginning to end they can be done like a devotional. Each section, I believe, is so small because of the richness of the content. .. it’s meant to be chewed, swallowed, – but in defiance of the method of eating. .. this material will consume you. ..while you feed upon it. A dichotomy often found in the way God serves a feast to His Children.

I, myself, will make few revisions to his work. Though I will make a note now that as Gurnall often referred to believers as saints. ..I will put follower/s of Messiah. Not for the sake of my readers but because I have such a hard time with that label… it’s too odd and in truth we are not called saints in any of the original languages the Word of God was written in. (This word was translated when put into Latin) Where Gurnall uses the word faith, I will add in (trust). These two slight changes I will do but no more. I will * where I myself lay emphasis.
Either in bold or italics.

Look for the first installment tomorrow. May you feast well and may the light you find shine brightly to the glory of God, in the reflection of Yeshua (Jesus), with the anointing of the Spirit. .. May we all be ever consumed into the enlistment of the Army of the Most High.

The Saint’s Fortification ~ Part 4

August 4, 2013 at 11:43 pm (Remodeling the Mind) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , )

***Taken from The Christian in Complete Armor by William Gurnall.***

4. Maintain Assurance of Salvation

Still another way to fortify yourself against Satan is to preserve the hope of your salvation, which is promised through the Messiah’s atoning sacrifice. Record God’s special visits to you in the memory book of your heart. Paste keepsakes of the occasions when He declared a holiday and came to you in festive robes of mercy, holding forth the scepter of His grace more familiarly than usual. Keep old receipts written in His own hand for the pardon of your sins.

“But,” the doubting soul may ask, “what if I cannot grasp this assurance, or vouch for those evidences which I once thought to be true?” Then try the following prescriptions as a tonic for your ailing trust.

First of all, renew your repentance, as if you had never repented. Put forth fresh acts of trust, as if you had never believed, and you – by the power of the Spirit – will beat Satan at his own game. Let him tell you that your former actions were hypocritical, or that they are old and worthless. What can he say about your present affirmation of trust? In this way, the very accusations he uses to drive you away from God, instead only serve to drive you into His loving arms!

If he still haunts you with fears of your spiritual conditions, then apply to the throne of grace and ask for a copy of the old evidence, which you have misplaced. The original is in the pardon office in heaven, of which the Messiah is the Master! And if you are a child of God, your name is on record in that court! Appeal to God, and hear the news from heaven, rather than listen to the tales your enemy brings from hell. If you would argue less with Satan and pray more to God about your fears, they would soon be resolved. Can you expect truth from a liar, or comfort from an adversary? Turn your back on him and go to God. Try not to worry. Sooner or later you will receive your certificate of assurance.

If your soul is so buffeted that you cannot seem to hear God’s reassuring answer above Satan’s howling, sail away from the enemy and head straight for God’s harbor. Make an honorable retreat into those assurances and strengths which Christ provides for His endangered soldiers. There are two places of advantage into which deserting souls may retire: the Name (character) of God, and the full proof promises of His Word. I think of these as  the fair heavens, which are chiefly of use when the storm is so great that the ship cannot live at sea. And there was nothing inherent in the creature to move the great God to make such promises, so there can be nothing in the creature to hinder the Almighty from keeping them, where and when He pleases. This act of trust in retreating to the promises, accompanied with a longing desire after that grace you are actively seeking, while it may not fully satisfy all your doubts, will nevertheless keep you from sinking.

Finally, if Satan continues to hound you, call in help and do not listen to the devil’s counsel to the contrary. The very strength of some temptations lies in trying to keep them hidden. Telling a trusted, godly friend of your struggles often brings relief. Satan knows this too well, so in order to more freely rifle the soul of its peace and comfort, he frightens into silence. He has kept many a poor soul in misery by swearing it to secrecy. You lose two blessings by keeping the devils secret – the light of your fellow brother/sisters Light of God, in their  experience of His grace and their prayers. And what a grave loss this is!

Weighed and Wanting

November 16, 2012 at 11:02 pm (Poems) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Where is the pivot?
I don’t like these “swings”
The counter balance of lots of in-betweens
The steady mast of center
Steady as she goes
Tipping slightly empty then full
The Hand of God only knows

Full of self depreciation
Counter with Love undeserving
Creaking back to self analysis
The opposing side pulls hard towards mercy

Beauty is a place mark of both
Only Spirit eyes can see
Dark and lonely need Light and Presence
The core of mystery

Hiding absurdly
Calls out to nakedly unashamed
Placed on the surface of sameness
Yet uniquely all my name

Thoughts and inner circumspection

Waves of silent intervention
Ebbs the one and then the other
Completely different, yet together

Illumination frames each side
Even what the darkness tries to hide
One can not fall at the Lights sweet call
Both know its Master

Up and down
Teeter and totter
Flesh follows the fall
While its Shaper lifts up
Both cause completion

Where is the pivot?
The place of steady unwavering
The part that pairs these positive and negative poles
Endless in its magicians magic to hold each at bay from a permanent landing it seems

Gravity in its unrelenting pull
The updraft of air that refuses to let go if its treasure
Holding aloft the gifts
Letting go the garbage

Weighed on one side
Wanting on the other
The Pedestal faithful to reveal the measure
An Unseen Hand calls out the heavy, making “light” of it all

Yoked in the in-between
Burdens begin to build muscles of trust
Joy flies from one side to the other
Love builds the callous of beauty
Hard it may seem but anchored to the rub

Friction sharpens its contrast
Dismay and despair trade on devotion and prayer
Can’t have one without the other
Held in the Hand of the souls Lover

Weighed without wanting
Wanting without weighing
The illusion of comfort cries out
The realism of needing both wins the shout

The Right Hand of Righteousness
Died on the cross beams
And the Balance became both
Weighed and wanting finds its Home
The Home, the Pivot, the Mast of Redeemed
