3. Avoid Entrapment

Be sure also, Child of God, to keep to the plains. That is, do not let Satan lure you into doctrinal traps where you can neither fight nor flee. One of his tactics is to lead you through a maze of impertinent questions intended to retard your progress toward heaven. Sometimes he asks a soul which it embraces? – free will or predestination? And whichever answer it gives, he confounds it with his crafty reply. Another time, he will demand to know the exact day and hour of your salvation, and if you cannot answer, he will challenge your right to claim kinship to Christ.

When Satan badgers you with trivial inquiries, do not try to reason with him. Answer him with your present position in Christ and His sure work of grace in your soul. Never forget that the simple truth of the Word reduces all the intricacies of Satan to a worthless heap of lies.

Now suppose you escape the trap of pointless questions; what will you do when Satan leads your trust down a trail of obscure scriptures? I am talking about those difficult passages which rush past the understanding as a mountain stream past the eye, until dizzy and disoriented, one drops in despair of their own condition. The wine of the gospel is heady stuff! Too much study in difficult places can confuse your soul and weaken your trust. Once again, keep to the plains. Combat Satan’s attack with simple scriptures – those most likely to nourish your trust and cheer your spirit. When you meet such straightforward scriptures as speak to your own walk, use them to ford the flood of temptation, and do not venture beyond your depth.

Satan will try to draw you off your steadfast course to heaven in still another way – by the presence of circumstances you cannot understand. With them, Satan argues against God’s steadfast love, and for your soul. First (by God’s permission) he pillaged Job’s earthly possessions, and then fell to work on his spiritual estate. He used every circumstance and everybody at his disposal. He had Job’s wife blame God; he had Job’s friends condemn the man himself. Satan convinced them all – except Job – that an afflicted condition and state of grace could not live together in the same house.

Here’s a timely warning when you find your soul adrift in a heavy fog of tribulation: neither accuse God foolishly of your enemies mischief, nor charge yourself with belonging to the enemy. God can chart a straight course in the worst storm. He can be righteous when He uses wicked instruments, and gracious when He dispenses harsh providences. Do not over-react to changes in your temporal estate. Christ told us to expect some rough sailing before we reach heaven’s shore.

Your perspective should be very different from that of the unregenerate. Like naive children, they think everyone loves them who gives them plums (or candy now). They do not realize that prosperity can be a curse to bind them in a deeper sleep of false security. Remember how Jael served Sisera (Judges 5:25-26). She gave him milk though he asked for water, that she might more surely nail him to the ground – milk having the property, it is said, to incline sleep. But the Child of God in an afflicted state has a key to decipher God’s providence. The Spirit, through the Word, teaches you to read the shorthand of His dispensations: every son whom He loves, He corrects. Behind the travail of every affliction is a blessing waiting to be born.

The Saints Fortification ~ Part 2

2. Cling to God’s Promise of Justification (Forgiveness)

Another way to fortify yourself against Satan is to study that grand gospel truth of a soul’s justification before God. Acquaint yourself with this truth in all its aspects: the free mercy of God’s grace; the accomplishment of Yeshua’s (Jesus) sacrifice; the effectiveness of trust in appropriating these blessings (ROM. 3:24-25). An effectual door once opened to let the soul in to this truth will spoil the devils market. (The hounding and taunting with the lie of condemnation).

When Satan comes to take away your peace, if you do not understand the full significance of your forgiveness in the Messiah you will be easily overcome. A child of God without assurance of salvation is as the rabbit that darts into the thicket to escape a fox, but is easily followed by the print of their feet and scent they leave behind. In Yeshua (Jesus) you have a hiding place where the enemy dare not come: ‘the clefts in the rock, in the secret places of the stairs’ (Song of Sol. 2:14)

While the devil may be in hot pursuit of your soul, the very scent of Christ’s blood, by which you are justified, is noxious to him and will stop him in his tracks. Run straight into this tower of the covenant, and roll this truth on the head of Satan, as the woman cast the stone on the head of Abimelech: ‘To him…that…believeth on Him that justifieth the ungodly, his trust is counted for righteousness’ (ROM. 4:5)

Psalms 32:1-2

Blessed are those whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered over; blessed is the man whose sin Adonai (the Lord) will not reckon against his account.

The Saints Fortification ~ Part 1

‘Well,’ you say, ‘I need no more arguments to prove the troublesome nature of my adversary. Tell me now what I can do to fortify myself against his attacks.’

1. Beware of Satan as a Seducer.
If you want to be protected from your enemy as a troubler, you must take heed of him as a seducer. You can be sure he takes heed of you! The handle of the hatchet with which he chops at the root of the Child of God’s comfort is commonly made of the child’s own wood. Satan is only a creature and cannot work without tools. He can indeed make much from a little, but he cannot make anything out of nothing. We see this in his assault on the Messiah, where he troubled himself to no purpose because he came and found nothing in Him. (John 14:30)

But when he comes to us he finds fossils of our old natures, which tell him much about our the disposition of our hearts. These are the artifacts of our carnal hearts once held so dear: our strength, our lust, our pride. He holds them out to us, thinking to draw us away from our new found grace in Yeshua (Jesus). Beware of his enticements. Do not drink from his cup; there is poison in it. Do not on look on it as it sparkles in the temptation. What you drink down with sweetness, you will be sure to bring up again as gall and wormwood.

Above all sins, guard against bold or arrogant ones. You are never beyond the danger of such. If caught in the web of presumptuous sin, call quickly to God for help. If you hesitate, you only give the enemy time to entangle you more tightly. But if you cry out to God in true repentance, He will come at once to rescue you. The sooner you yield to the Spirit, the less damage is done.

God’s Perfect Response to Satan’s Accusations ~ Part 3

3. God uses the devils wiles to make His saints wary.

You are not dealing with an enemy without his own store of intelligence, but with one who has wit enough to spill your comfort and spoil your joy if not closely watched. Your peace is the dainty tidbit he gapes for. To keep the flies out of your cupboard in summer is no harder than to bar Satan from your conscience. He has robbed the saints of many a sweet meal and sent them supperless to bed; be always on your guard, for he roams your way also.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

I love that Gurnall points out that Satan is not STUPID!. A fool – yes…(the fool is the one who says there’s NO God) but dumb – no. In a world which considers “intelligence” to market at such high value; the “wisdom” of the world has bought the devils wares. His mantra is “Get smart”. On the other hand the same world thinks walking with Elohim is a “mindless” excuse for living in a hard world; That emotions trump “logic” to believe in Yeshua (Jesus). Cute trick enemy of my God…but a lie none the less. Elohim is the supreme intelligentsia!! And He gives the mind of the Messiah to His children. ( 1 Corinthians 2:16 )
Here’s the truth that puts such lies to the everlasting furnace of fools: this world does not appreciate the intelligence Adonai (the Lord) gifts His kids with! It appears foolish to a fool, and confounds the “elite” minds of this world. It takes on the same hue as God, Himself did to Satan in the beginning. Satan thought God was dumb! The children of the adversary think the pursuit of Elohim’s wisdom is dumb, too. In other words…nothing lowers a person’s “IQ” faster than distain towards God. Be wary of putting “stock” in what this world calls “smart”. Better to be a “dimwit” to mankind than found a fool before Adonai.

I will continue from this book in the next series; The Saints Fortification. 🙂

God’s Perfect Response to Satan’s Accusations ~ Part 2

2. God uses Satan’s tricks to make His saints thankful.

You know the boulders the devil rolls in your path. If today the road is clear, what relief and joy your soul must feel! None surpasses Satan at stirring up trouble, yet you have peace in your conscience. To whom are you obliged for your serenity of spirit? To none but your God, who holds Satan in custody and will not let him enter the garden of your soul! This thief sees your pleasant fruits as they hang, and his mouth waters at them; but the wall is too high for him to climb. God keeps him out of this paradise. It is not the grace of God in you, but the favor of God as a shield about you that defends you from the wicked one. What more do we need to hear to make our hearts swell in gratitude?
